5 Design Tips for Squarespace
When it comes to building websites, we couldn’t sing Squarespace’s praises higher. Squarespace is a slick and easy-to-navigate website builder that helps to bring your brand or business to life with simple drag and drop functions. The best thing about Squarespace, is the way it can grow and adapt to your business. Whether it’s adding more complex code to make your site more bespoke, adding additional functions that will improve UX, or the ability to create an e-commerce function at the swift tap of a button. The possibilities, as they say, are endless.
With that in mind, our website whizz and Co-Founder, Jess talks us through her top five design tips for those looking to build their own Squarespace website.
Get your branding in order
Before embarking on your Squarespace website build, make sure to have your branding kit ready to use. Knowing which colours you’ll be using, the fonts you’ll use for different header types and paragraph text, and any logos or illustrations upfront, will help make your site come together much easier and it’ll look slicker too.
Image admin
Sizing/naming your images before uploading to Squarespace is an immediate win. It will help manage your site speed and load times but also make the library easier to search when you’re looking for a specific image. Plus, it’s brilliant for SEO - after all who has ever Googled ‘IMG-0072’, right?
Make it mobile-friendly
Around 50% of people view web content on their mobile, why? It’s convenient and more people have access to them. So it’s definitely worth making sure your website is not only available to view on mobile but is super mobile-friendly too. This sometimes requires a bit of code but can make a big difference to a user’s experience of your site if they’re browsing on mobile.
Build an image library
Really look at the images you’ve got available for your site and identify what images go with which section of your site. Do your images look good together? You want them to have a similar look and feel so your site looks more coherent. Consistency is key here!
Don’t overcrowd your site with too much copy
We often see websites with boundless amounts of copy, so much so, by the end of the third line our brains have switched off. Whilst making sure your keywords are regularly mentioned throughout to help out with SEO - you do need to play a fine balance with how and where you put your copy. Design can really help with this, lay around with the margins in your web design, white space can sometimes make your content much more digestible.
