Home and Interiors Trends in 2023 According To Pinterest

There are a few things I look forward to when it comes to a new year; a new diary, a new set of goals, finding out the Pantone colour of the year…but my personal favourite? It’s got to be reading through the annual Pinterest Predicts report. As a self-confessed social media nerd, I will never (ever-ever-ever) stop extolling the virtues of Pinterest. Out of all the marketing channels out there, it has a truly special place in my heart. Why? Because it’s so much more than a social media site. In fact, it’s not really a social media platform at all…it’s a search engine that’s bursting full of visual inspiration that doesn’t have an expiry date on it. In a world filled with complex algorithms, it’s super refreshing to have a channel that encourages content to last longer than a hot second.

Every feature they roll out feels intuitive, and thought through. They are on the side of creators and brands, they’re on the side of content. Everything feels relevant, and it always has a place for all your ideas whether it’s a home project, a trip you’re taking, or a website you’re designing - it has it all.

So what is Pinterest Predicts? It’s an annual report that has been running for three glorious years. Much like a trend forecasting agency, they give an overview of emerging trends for the year ahead. Unlike other trend forecasting agencies, they work solely from their data trends, what’s increasing in search, and how different age groups/demographics are searching. And, on top of that, they estimated that 80% of their predictions have come true in the last 3 years. And that, friend is a very good stat indeed!

So whilst they predict all types of trends from wellness to fashion. I thought I’d focus in on what Home and Interiors trends are looking for 2023, after all - in my opinion, Pinterest is the home of all fun new home trends. So without further ado let’s jump in:

Move over baths, it’s show(er) time

Small home dwellers will be rejoicing, showers are on the rise. If your brand fits this niche and is looking to stay on trend this new year, it’s time to prioritise the shower aesthetic, which has had a 460% search rise in the last 12 months on Pinterest. This an exciting trend for homeowners and renters alike, which really opens up which brands can tap into this. From interior designers to e-commerce homeware businesses. The trend spans everything from the bigger choices a homeowner might make, like doorless shower ideas (up +110% on Pinterest search) to the beauty end of the scale with the search on Shower Bombs up by 90%.

Who could tap into this trend:

This is a great trend for most businesses in the homeware, interior design, architectural wellness, and beauty sectors. Equally fashion and lifestyle brands who keep their content fluid, and incorporate more daily lifestyle content could also sneak a few pieces of content in around this too. There’s always a tenuous link, right?

Water conscious home

It’s no surprise that each year we see growing trends and search results around green initiatives, from composting in the garden to biophilic design and now this year, water conservation at home. The gap between luxury homes and green homes continues to decrease. Reducing an eco-footprint whilst also keeping a stylish home, are no longer two separate entities. Whilst eco-living has been on the rise for a while, it’s exciting to see this particular trend on the rise. This will look at the more practical side of design, but nonetheless - a great home trend for brands to look into.

Who could tap into this trend:

This feels like a natural fit for interior designers and architects (Rainwater harvesting architecture was up +155% on Pinterest search results), who no doubt are already more than embracing green design. Obviously, landscaping brands and gardeners would also benefit from this trend too. Creating content around rising niche trends such as water conservation at home will be sure to make you stick out from the crowd. Also, a quick nod to any eco-brand who creates content around all aspects of eco-life, this could be a great piece for you also.

Preloved pieces

Another continuing (and massively growing) trend is the use of second-hand furniture pieces. Rather than homes feeling out of sorts from their mismatch of furniture it will feel more like a celebration of design, embracing the maximalist feel and the uniqueness of it all. The key here is mixing, in fact ‘Mixing modern and antique furniture was up +530% on Pinterest search results. This goes to show buyers are really shopping around for what they fall in love with, rather than specifically seeking out certain era trends/brands.

Who could tap into this trend:

This one is perfect for Interior Designers or Home/Interior Influencers. The search trends really stretch from design styles like Maximalism (Maximalist décor vintage is up +350% on Pinterest search) to more practical sides of home decor, like windows and hardware (Antique windows repurposed is up +50% on Pinterest search).

Front of house

Move over back garden, it’s all about what’s happening out front in 2023. Search trends are showing that consideration for porches, doorways and even porticos is trending upward. It seems the parts of your home on show are more important than ever. It’s also worth noting this is extending to the hallway too (Front hallway décor ideas are up +190% on Pinterest search), perhaps more people are entertaining these days eh?

Who could tap into this trend:

A wide range of brands/individuals could tap into this - from Interior Designers to Homeware businesses. It feels like a great reoccurring piece as well, that could span all of the seasons from floral springs to festive winters.

Funky decor

A great budget-friendly trend rising is funky decor, stemming from the increased interest in home decor which helps people express themselves creatively which occurred in lockdown. This form of maximalist expression should continue to grow far into 2023, for instance, ‘Funky house décor’ is up by 695% in Pinterest search. As this trend spans the whole home, we see there are a lot of opportunities to create really fun and engaging content around this. Whilst it might feel like a specific Gen Z trend, Pinterest has noted that Boomers have also been heavily searching these types of terms, so don’t be afraid to delve in.

Who could tap into this trend:

Everyone with a link to homes/interiors. This trend suits all budgets, as it can cover overall home design, which Interior Designers may advise on, or home accessory pieces that homeware retail shops can pick up. Also seems like a wonderful time to be in the business of mushrooms (Fantasy mushroom art is up +170% on Pinterest search).
